Australia leads the world in regulatory infrastructure for online harm. The Online Safety Act 2021 created the eSafety Commissioner, an independent regulator with statutory powers to demand removal of harmful content from any platform operating in Australia. Bullying that affects schools is governed by state-by-state education department policy.

Scale: About 1 in 5 Australian young people experience cyberbullying in any given year, per eSafety Commissioner research. Many do not report it for fear of having devices removed. The risk is highest in mid-teens.

What schools in this country must do.

All Australian schools have anti-bullying policies, often jurisdiction-specific. Concerns should go to the principal or year-level head and the school counsellor in parallel. Most state education departments require formal investigation within a defined window. Independent and Catholic schools follow similar policies.

When to involve law enforcement.

The eSafety Commissioner has statutory takedown powers — file at esafety.gov.au for the fastest removal. Crimes (threats, image-based abuse, contact from adults) go to local police; the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation handles serious cases.

The email script that works for the school.

Email the principal and the school counsellor; many state education departments specify both as required recipients. Request a copy of the school’s anti-bullying policy and the investigation timeline. eSafety Commissioner publishes a parent template if needed.
